Abstract

The aim of this study is to asses the goiter incidence and iodine deficiency. 590 basic school student (295 Male 295females) were randomly selected from three zones of Almatamma locality; Almatama, Elnorab, and Wed-Hamed. The study was done via a survey which included clinical assessments of students’ thyroid glands (goiter), a questionnaire and laboratory investigations for the urinary iodine execration. The study revealed that the prevalence of goiter was 5.2% in Al-Matamma locality. The most prevalent goiter was visible goiter 1A and 1B (4.5%). Only (0.7%) of goitrous pupils either had G2 or G3 stage of goiter. The prevalence of goiter shown in the Almatama is lower than reported ones by many previous studies such as Ahmed (2015) in Shendi (14.6%) on the east side of the River Nile. The incidence of iodine deficiency in the elementary school students showed that most of the students had mild iodine deficiency (58%), followed by moderate deficiency (22.4%) and (3.6%) had severe ID. The association between iodine deficiency and school zone was statistically significant. Most of the students with severe and moderate iodine deficiency belonged to Alnorab zone (29%) followed by Almatamma zone (23 %).
