Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of mercury (Hg) exposure on liver function of the gold prospectors using mercury (Hg) for extraction of gold.  It was descriptive cross sectional analytical one, carried out in Abu Hamad town in River Nile State – Northern Sudan from February to July 2018. It included eighty (80) participants, fifty (50) of them were gold prospectors as a case group and thirty (30) healthy individuals as control group.The result revealed that the average serum mercury level was significantly higher in the case group (63.6 µg/l) compared control group (3.0 µg/l) with P. value of (0.002). There was significant increase in serum transaminases .The average GGT in the case group was (38.0 IU/L) compared with (18.9 IU/L) of control group with P. value of (0.000).  The level of the serum ALP in the case group was (82.8 IU/L) compared with (63.1 IU/L) of the control group with P. value of (0.000) . More alarming, result point to significant decrease in the structural function of the liver as reflected in the mean blood albumin in the case group of (3.9 g/dL) compared to (4.7 g/dL) of the control group with P. value of (0.000). There were insignificant differences in the other liver parameters between the case and the control group. There was a negative correlation between serum albumin and serum mercury level with r = (-0.23), with P.value of (0.04), and a positive correlation with serum.GGT r = (0.526), with P. value of (0.000).
